The Joy of Encounter

On this Fourth Sunday of Advent, the Gospel takes us to a tender and joy-filled moment: Mary’s visit to Elizabeth (Luke 1:39-45). This encounter between two women of faith—one carrying the Savior and the other His forerunner—brims with the Holy Spirit's presence and points us toward the heart of the Advent season.

Elizabeth’s response to Mary is one of profound recognition and humility. She exclaims, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” Elizabeth’s words honor Mary, not only as the mother of Jesus but as one who believed in and trusted God’s promises. Her focus on Mary’s faith and openness should resonate with us as a parish named in honor of the Assumption, where we reflect on Mary’s unique role in salvation history and her journey into God’s eternal embrace.

As a Franciscan parish, we are reminded of the humility, simplicity, and joy that characterized the lives of Saints Francis and Clare—qualities that Mary exemplified. Like Mary, they trusted God’s providence, rejoiced in His blessings, and sought to bring Christ into the world through acts of love and service. We should strive to do the same in our daily walk.

Elizabeth’s greeting invites us to ask ourselves: Do we recognize Christ in those we encounter, just as Elizabeth recognized Him in Mary? How can we, like Elizabeth, encourage and affirm the faith of others? Do we always see Jesus in the people we encounter?

This Advent, as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, let us embrace the spirit of Mary and Elizabeth. Let us rejoice in God’s promises, support one another in faith, and share the light of Christ with a world longing for hope.

May we continue to reflect the spirit of Mary’s “yes” to God and the Franciscan call to live simply, humbly, and joyfully as witnesses to the Gospel. Blessed Mary, assumed into heaven, pray for us!
